Bunting and flags are flying on homes for day not to be forgotten

BUNTING and flags have adorned many homes again in the weeks leading up to Liberation Day.

Lesley Bodman’s cottage in St Martin’s is adorned in red, white and blue and has a Guernsey flag covering the door. She said it was really important to keep the memory of Liberation Day alive. Guernsey flags – including the green and white tricolour version – and union flags have been seen on homes in many parishes.

St Sampson’s resident Colin Paver, 81, said he had always decorated his home and has a British standard from the war era among his collection.

‘Lots of people gave their lives and I don’t think it should ever be forgotten. We always go down to celebrate [on Liberation Day],’ he said.

In St Martin’s, Lesley Bodman had decorated her Guernsey cottage in red, white and blue.

‘I just think it’s really important to keep the memory alive, it’s important for the young,’ she said.

‘We’ve not always decorated the house but decided to in the last 10 years or so, it doesn’t take long to do,’ she said.

One of the stand-out displays was in St Sampson’s where Johnathon Gibson and wife Rachael had decorated their house with flags in a family tradition.

‘My husband’s mum, who we lost recently, was in the WRAF and some of the flags used to be at her house.

‘It’s his way of remembering her. He’s always put flags up but this year really went for it,’ said Mrs Gibson.
