Police are investigating reports that a number of vehicles were damaged overnight on Saturday, where several cars were scratched, apparently with a key or other sharp object.

Resident Sarah McGreevy said her car had already been scratched while parked in the road and she was sure another one had been added over the weekend.

‘I suspect one of the scratches is new,’ she said.

‘You end up just not getting it fixed because they’re doing so much damage.’

She thought it highly likely that the damage was caused by people leaving public houses in the area, walking either up or down the road, scratching cars as they passed.

As well as the damage to vehicles, an exterior garage light was ripped off the wall over last weekend.

This belonged to Evelyn ‘Bunty’ de Putron: ‘The light covering wasn’t broken nor the bulb but the electrician is going to have to bring back a whole new fitting,’ she said.

Although on this occasion her car was safely parked in her new garage, before the garage was built the vehicle had been in the road and fallen victim to passing vandals who had not only scratched it but also bent the wing mirrors out of position.

‘I took it to the garage and they told me it was going to cost hundreds to repair the scratches,’ she said.

Like Mrs McGreevy, in the end she decided to leave it, but was annoyed that there was no way of getting compensation.

‘You have no redress at all,’ said Mrs de Putron.

Sarah Whitehead’s car had escaped scratching on this occasion, but it had previously been targeted.

‘We’ve had this for years,’ she said.

‘A couple of times in the last couple of weeks we had both our wing mirrors turned around. They’re electric so we were worried they wouldn’t work, but they seem to be all right.’

Eleanor Harris and her husband Norman have lived in the road for many years and had a particularly bad experience on a separate occasion.

‘We had a brand new car, just delivered. The next day someone had scratched it. In the past we’ve had lots going on in this road.’
