Channel Island views are among Lonely Planet’s top 500 ranking
THE 270 steps at Petit Port, Sark’s La Coupee bridge and Moulin Huet bay have been named among the most brilliant sights and experiences in Britain.
Lonely Planet has published a new book ranking the top 500 unmissable sights, experiences and hidden gems across Britain, and seven are from the Bailiwick.
Leading the way for the Channel Islands are Guernsey’s rugged south coast cliffs at number 163, which are described as ‘wonderfully diverse coastline scenery’ with ‘undulating cliff paths’, ‘pretty little coves’, ‘numerous seabird nesting grounds’ and ‘remains of ancient fortifications’.
Sark’s ‘precariously narrow’ land bridge La Coupee is ranked at number 255, and Herm, which is described as ‘hilly, green, and fringed by some of the Channel Islands’ most spectacular beaches’ comes in at number 257.
Freewheeling along Alderney’s windswept coast, discovering your inner artist at Moulin Huet bay, descending the steps at Petit Port, and communing with a higher power at Les Vauxbelets also make it into the top 500 things to see and do ranking in at 306, 472, 474 and 482 respectively. Jersey manages to clinch only one spot on the list, number 326, for its Second World War bunker turned ‘stellar’ museum.
Tom Hall from Lonely Planet said it was no surprise that the islands feature so extensively.
‘The Channel Islands offer exquisite coastlines and old-world charm so it’s with good reason that a number of sights and experiences feature among our favourite across the UK.’
To create the list the Lonely Planet team compiled every highlight from the Lonely Planet guidebooks to Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Every site, attraction and experience that caught their writers' attention over the years were included. Everybody in Lonely Planet UK's community was asked to vote for their top 20 experiences and hundreds of votes were cast and created the final 500.
