Political party founded to ‘get things done in next Assembly’

A NEW political party has been set up in Guernsey.

Alliance Party Guernsey aims to bring together like-minded people to create the group.

It was founded by Barry Weir, who said the aim was to give people the chance to vote for deputies who will stand on the same policies agreed in one manifesto.

‘With island-wide voting in the next election it is now more important than ever that voters know exactly what candidates are standing for,’ he said.

‘Just as importantly though, we need a strong party to be able to push through policies by voting collectively on the promises made in the manifesto.

‘I feel, and many people I’ve spoken to agree, that the current non-party political system means that things don’t get done. There’s often too many factions on key decisions.’

He said the party was keen to hear from islanders about what they wanted.

‘We particularly want to hear from people on the front line, like health care professionals, teachers, nurses, the police and business people,’ he said.

‘The policy decisions made by the States affect these people and we need their knowledge and experience to help work out the best way forward.

‘We will be creating a committee to help formulate and finalise our policies, which we want to be as diverse as possible.’

This month the Alliance Party registered as a company and next month will officially apply for party status to allow it to enter the June 2020 elections.

Mr Weir plans to stand as a deputy in the election.

The entrepreneur, who became a self-made millionaire aged 21, retired in 2007.

He had a two-decade rallying career, during which he toured the globe.

He entered the record books in 2000 when he drove a 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 more than 30,000km around the world.

The party’s policies include freezing taxes except for specific projects, reviews of education and health policies and a possible tax on land development.
