She was part of the Princesses and Knights event held at the castle for the day. Castle staff have been organising a number of special themed events in recent weeks to help entertain regular local visitors, as the castle is welcoming very few off-island visitors this year.

This week there was a special trail around the castle, where explorers had to find Cinderella’s broom, Snow White’s apple, a pea plant from Princess and the Pea, and Rapunzel’s long plait, which hung from a tower window.

There was also a separate trail, where children had to find five special fairy doors. The hunt has taken place before, but the tricky fairies have been moving their doors each week, meaning young people have been having to find them again.

Princess Aurora was on hand to greet visitors at the castle. She admitted it was quite warm to be dressed up, but her hoop skirt was helping to keep her legs cool.

‘It’s been quite busy this morning,’ she said.

‘We have had regulars coming back. It is something for young people to do, and they love it.’

Visitor services officer Rachael McCutcheon said their numbers were obviously going to be down this year, due to a lack of visitors. But they were keen to give their Discovery Card holders – who have free access to Guernsey Museum’s sites when they are open – value for money.

‘We are doing everything we can to put on interesting things for locals,’ she said.

‘We hope they will come in.’

She paid tribute to the pared down museum’s team for all their hard work and made special mention of Jo Dowding, who has helped to organise activities.

This is the third week of events, which have previously focused on wizardry and a rainbow trail.

Next week the theme will be all about weapons and warfare.
