Seafront is abuzz for Arts Sunday
CROWDS of islanders headed to the seafront for the special Arts Sunday event yesterday.
Live music, crafts and artwork were all on offer along the Quay in Town, as well as a variety of stalls showcasing local creativity.
Monika Drabot is from the Guernsey Arts Commission, which coordinated the event.
‘This is the biggest art event of the year,’ she said.
‘We have over 90 stalls this year and it’s really lovely to come out of lockdown and do this. People haven’t seen each other in a long time and this is a great way to share creativity. We wanted to be inclusive and get everyone involved.’
GAC community arts development officer Jade Kershaw said it was not just about traditional ideas of art, but also performance and music, with several stages put on to show off local entertainment skills.
‘It’s about promoting everything,’ she said.
At the more traditional end the commission had made a blank Guernsey Together banner and asked members of the public to decorate it with handprints. It is hoped the artwork will feature at other events over the summer.
Among the artists adding to the banner was eight-year-old Belle Solway, who decided to do her hand in red and include nails in her picture.
‘I like art and I have been having a good time,’ she said.
‘I like to see people putting a lot of work into their paintings and drawings.’
The stalls were buzzing with shoppers, with everything from resin art to paintings on offer.
Among the people browsing was Katie Cobb, who had recently come out of quarantine.
‘I think this is fantastic,’ she said.
‘It’s really lovely to see Guernsey crafts and music. There’s a really nice vibe.’
