Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service were called out to Rue Frairies, St Andrew's, in the early hours of Sunday morning to put out the blaze.

'I was going to get my brother from Town and on my way back there was a blue rubbish bag in the road,' said driver Flynn Bourgaize.

'I slowed down and tried to avoid it, but as I tried to avoid it a gust of wind blew it under my car and it went up in flames almost immediately.

'I got everyone to get out the car as soon as I could due to the flames. I reckon I had around 20 seconds before everything went up totally.

'I called the Fire Brigade and they came within 10 minutes.

'On the way I had a friend with me to keep my company but we were all okay because I evacuated everyone as soon as the fire started.

A Fire Service spokesperson said: ‘We received the initial call to mobilise to a car on fire at 2:02am.'

One Water Tender was mobilised with four personnel.

'At 2:09am we were on scene and one Firefighter used breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to have been a bin bag that got wedged under the vehicle engine compartment and exhaust manifold.
