Tommy Long checked in at 8.37am weighing 7lb 4oz. His scheduled arrival was yesterday, but it was clear by Christmas Eve that he would be coming early.

Parents Charlie, 34, who works for Carey Commercial, and Nathan, 35, said staff on Loveridge Ward had told them Tommy was the first baby to be born there on Christmas Day for several years.

Given his due date, there was always a chance that he might arrive on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

‘There was a bit of apprehension at first as we thought he might be born on Christmas Eve,’ said Mr Long, who works for Kleinwort Hambros.

‘The reaction from the midwives and other staff on Loveridge Ward was quite special and we’re so grateful to them all.’

Sisters Chloe, 15, who goes to Blanchelande, and Ruby, 12, who attends Les Beaucamps High, said it had been great day for them.

‘I was very excited, especially as it was a boy,’ said Ruby.

Chloe said it had been the most special day for them and Tommy was the nicest Christmas present of all.

Both said they would be volunteering to babysit in future.

Mr Long said his daughters would no doubt get their chance.

‘The age gap between them means we will have some support for mum at home,’ he said.

He thinks the family must have something about Christmas Day.

‘We’ve been married for 10 years and when we got engaged it was on Christmas Day 12 years ago, when we were also in the Guernsey Press.’

The family do not think it is a disadvantage to celebrate your birthday on Christmas Day.

‘Going forward, it will probably be that the first part of Christmas Day will be for the whole family while the later part will be Tommy’s,’ said Mrs Long.

Ruby had another solution.

‘We could wrap half of the presents up in Christmas paper and the rest in birthday paper,’ she said.
