Large ’snake’ turned out to be skin left as geocache find

WHEN a large ‘snake’ was spotted in the Vale and reported to the GSCPA, staff were suspicious.

And rightly so, as it turned out to be a skin used as a geocache rather than an escaped animal.

Last Thursday photos were sent to the GSPCA animal warden Suzy Rose of a snake skin on one of the outcrops at Bordeaux Harbour.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne and the States vet was informed, but as the pictures were scrutinised by the GSPCA team, some concerns were raised.

Three years ago there were reports that dog walkers on L’Ancresse Common had seen a snake, but the GSPCA carried out searches and nothing was ever found.

This time the team planned to venture out to the grassy outcrop of rocks at the next low tide in daylight.

‘The pictures we were sent made for some very sceptical frowns, including myself, but while we were making plans we found out that although it was a snake skin, it was actually a geocache site,’ Mr Byrne said.

‘Thankfully we found out before we ventured over.’

Every year the GSPCA has calls to rescue animals that are not actually animals, such as a ‘dead cat’ that turned out to be a hand puppet, and a trapped bird of prey which was actually a plastic statue.

There are no native snakes in Guernsey.
