His owner, Aimee De La Mare, thanked the community for helping her look for the seven-year-old outdoor rescue cat, who went missing on 5 August, and for the vast amount of support and kind messages she received.
‘So many dozens of people helped us look for Clive, strangers as well. After seeing the missing advertisements in the Guernsey Press, people were calling us saying they thought they had seen him, and we were getting lots of kind messages from people,’ said Ms De La Mare.
‘We were blown away by people’s kindness, and we want to thank everyone for their kind messages and help.’
She said that Clive almost always comes home for dinner every evening, so she was immediately concerned the first time he did not appear.
‘The longer he was missing, the more we feared the worst. We didn’t know what the outcome would be and life was kind of on hold without him.’
On the eighth day he was missing, she thought she heard Clive meowing inside the nearby warehouse.
Although she was sure she was imagining it, she called the owner of the warehouse to get the code for the lock.
When she opened the door, Clive was in the back of the building scared, hungry and hiding.
‘We are so happy he’s home now. Until you have a pet, I don’t think you truly appreciate how big a part of your family they become,’ she said.
After Clive’s big adventure, Ms De La Mare said he was given the all clear from a vet, but he still has some psychological trauma to work through.
‘I think he’s kind of forgotten how to be a cat.
‘He’s been sitting outside the window just looking around and meowing. We think he’s a little scared and traumatised after his experience.’
She said Clive has been spoiled with treats and love since returning home.
‘He’s a rescue so he doesn’t usually like affection, but when he came home he was really loveable and wanted to be near us. It was really heart-warming.’
After her experience, Ms De La Mare said she hopes everyone will check their sheds and out-buildings for animals that may be stuck – especially after bad weather.
‘We think Clive may have gone in the warehouse to get out of the weather and then got stuck.
Ms De La Mare said she, her partner, Clive and other cat Coco are all happy to be together again.
She hopes that Clive has learned his lesson in the future, but now knows the first place to check if he is ever missing again.
