Artist James Colmer said it was an amazing opportunity to be asked to create the painting.

‘I decided it was too juicy a job to turn down,’ he said, after being approached by the director of White Rock Productions, Alex Bates.

The film is set in the Second World War during the German Occupation of Guernsey and is about the bombing of the White Rock.

James said he aimed to capture emotion and meaning in his painting.

‘In the people and places I paint, I try to bring out their personalities and emotions to create something deeper and more colourful than just a straight landscape or portrait,’ he explained.

‘I’ve been a scribbler ever since I could pick up a pencil so I was always destined to be an artist somehow.’

From growing up in Guernsey to spending time in the UK, James has always pursued a career in art.

‘After schooling in Guernsey, I went off to Falmouth College of Arts to study an arts foundation, then a BA honours in illustration,’ he said.

‘After some time in Cornwall I moved back to Guernsey, combining work as a graphic designer, illustrator and artist.’

Visitors to the museum can also enjoy Heroes of the Viking World, a touring exhibition from Jorvik which can be viewed until 31 Dec 2021.

Tying in with this theme, the Discovery Room offers a replica Viking Ship, replica Viking objects, costumes and games to play, as well as a colourful display of sculptures from Guernsey and around the world.

The Guernsey Museum is open every day from 10am-5pm.

Normal admission rates apply, with Discovery Pass holders and accompanying children having free admission.
