People of all ages and abilities are invited to join the charity for an afternoon of pumpkin carving, a fancy dress competition, local wares, and seasonal food offerings. There will also be a seed swap where members of the community can exchange seeds or leave a donation.
‘It’s the first year we’ve done something like this,’ said Sarah Breton, event organiser and vice-chairwoman of Edible Guernsey.
‘We’ve got all of these pumpkins, and we wanted to do something to promote Edible Guernsey. We’ve been working really hard to make this a community space.’
Edible Guernsey offers many services to the community, and Ms Breton said the event is meant to show off what the charity has achieved this season.
Not only does the charity offer members a chance to lease garden beds in the greenhouse, there also plots and pots allotted for the newly expanded community education garden. Large raised garden beds give the elderly and disabled access to the world of gardening as well.
In addition to other activities, Edible Guernsey is setting up a photo wall for fancy dress, and there will also be a competition to guess the weight of a few hefty pumpkins.
Ms Breton said she is still seeking face painters for the event, and she is always appealing generally for volunteers and members.
The great pumpkin carve up will be at the Edible Guernsey Vinery in St Peter’s on Sunday from noon to 3pm. No registration or pre-booking is required. Donations are encouraged.
There will be another pumpkin carving event in Church Square on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. For £5 per pumpkin, the Guernsey Rotary Club is helping children carve jack-o-lanterns. The proceeds will benefit Edible Guernsey.
