Birds of feather flock together for poultry show

BIRDS ruled the roost at St John’s Church Hall on Saturday morning as more than 97 poultry entrants waited for the winners of the Guernsey Poultry Club poultry and egg show to be announced.

Seven-year-old Joe Corr entered three golden Dutch bantam chickens for competition and he was eagerly awaiting category winners to be determined.

Joe brought two hens and one rooster to the show and he said he could handle all of them.

‘He’s always noisy,’ said Joe, picking up his petite rooster.

Joe listed how he takes care of his birds morning and night, but he said the work does not bother him much because he loves to be outside.

He added that he also had goats, cows and a pony at home that kept him very busy.

Jeanette Brache, one of the adult entrants, said winners would be announced for 12 sections. Although entries were down compared with normal, she believed Covid-19 was to blame.

‘The Guernsey Poultry Club poultry and egg show is important because it keeps breeds going and it helps poultry breeders not to lose the breed standards,’ said entrant Marcel Worley.

Mr Worley said the Guernsey Poultry Club holds two shows each year – one in the spring and one in autumn.

For Saturday’s show, there were 97 bird entries from five junior entrants and eight adult entrants.
