The footage came to light some two months later when police seized Reece Blondel’s mobile phone after he was the lead motorcyclist during an incident at Rectory Hill in which 18-year-old Haydn Dodd was killed after his machine collided with a bus.
Blondel, 22, who at a previous appearance had given his address as White House, La Vassalerie, St Andrew’s, admitted counts of driving at a speed dangerous to the public and driving in a dangerous manner.
In the Royal Court yesterday, he was sent to prison for a total of 10 months and taken off the roads for six years.
Lt-Bailiff Russell Finch said the court ‘had to protect other road users from such moronic, lethal and deeply shocking behaviour’.
Prosecuting advocate Marc Davies said it was not being suggested that the defendant’s riding had contributed to his friend’s death and Mr Dodd’s family held no ill will towards him.
Blondel filmed himself strapping his mobile phone to his crash helmet at his home at 5.20am on 25 February last year, before riding off on his Suzuki GSXR600.
En route he told the camera ‘you have to let it warm up first’ before taking his speed from 50mph to 121mph along Rue du Dos d’Ane, before dropping back to 70mph.
He topped 100mph again on his travels and for a short while was riding only on the back wheel.
The recording also showed Blondel riding past a States Works truck, with lights flashing and a man working at its rear. He slowed to 50mph to overtake before racing up towards 119mph again at King’s Mills.
While removing his crash helmet at the end of his ride he said for the recording: ‘That’s the best idea I’ve ever had.’
Footage lasting eight minutes was shown to the court, during which time Blondel sat with his head bowed and his eyes closed.
