The building is now twice the size that it used to be and as well as wheelchair-accessible ladies’ and gents’ toilets, there is a baby change facility and shower facilities for boaters and those staying at the Mermaid campsite.

‘This project has been long awaited and anticipated and we hope you will be as happy with the new block as we are,’ said Herm’s marketing, PR and brand manager Kate Evans.

Other projects, some of which are ongoing, have focused on energy saving and environmental issues.

Among the work was the roof on the Mermaid cottages being replaced, new flooring and interior fittings to the Harbour Cafe, loft insulation and boiler replacements across the island, a new roof for the dairy cottage and a new kitchen to be installed at Fisherman’s Cottage.

There were also upgrades to the staff accommodation, while broadband for staff and guests has been upgraded from 40mbps to 100 and the installation of a new wifi network for Seagull Village campsite.

Then there was renovation of part of the long barn to a grocery shop, off-licence and cafe at Seagull Village campsite, new cottage and garden furniture, work to the hotel swimming pool and land management, landscaping and gardening projects.

Mrs Evans thanked ‘many fantastic local suppliers and contractors who have helped to bring these projects to fruition, often in very challenging weather and working conditions’.

‘With an extra special thank you, as ever, to Justin De Carteret of Herm & Guernsey Oysters, without whose help and cargo transport assistance we would certainly not have been able to achieve as much as we have.

‘And of course, the skilled and diligent Herm service and facilities team, managed by our highly-regarded James Hastings, have been instrumental in making sure all the winter works are completed in a limited window of time.’

She said that teamwork was key when living on such a small island and the management was exceptionally proud of how the team worked so well together ‘with a genuine love for the island and a common goal to see it progress and thrive while retaining its timeless charm and beauty’.
