Pedro the puffin recovering well
PEDRO the puffin is recovering well after two months in the care of the GSPCA.
The oiled bird was rescued from Lihou at the start of February.
GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said Pedro had been very poorly.
‘It is rare for us to rescue puffins as they spend most of their life out at sea,’ he said.
‘Puffins are so delicate and often don’t survive when found sick or injured, so it is wonderful to see Pedro do so well.
'He has recently been allowed to go out on our rehabilitation pools with two guillemots that were found oiled who are also recovering.’
He said that oil was often stirred up in stormy weather.
‘When birds land on it floating they lose the ability to fly and float and means they cannot hunt and feed themselves,’ he said.
‘His natural oils are slowly returning after the crude oil stripping them and we are hopeful he will soon be able to be released.’
Adults arrive back at their breeding colonies in March and April and leave again in mid-August. Some remain in the North Sea at winter, while others move further south to the Bay of Biscay.
Puffins feed on fish, especially sandeels.
