Brouard - ‘most visiting PEH staff would like to live within campus’

MOST people coming in to the island to work at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital would like staff accommodation to be on the campus, the president of the Committee for Health & Social Care has said.

Campaigners against building staff accommodation on a green field at the PEH argue that staff today do not always want to live on site.

In a column in the Guernsey Press this week, Deputy Peter Roffey said he suspected only ‘a minority’ of health workers would want to live close to the hospital.

‘This is inaccurate, based on the requests we received,’ said Deputy Al Brouard, pictured.

‘While it is correct to say that not all staff will want to live on the PEH campus, the majority of those that request staff accommodation – particularly those without transport or who are in positions that require them to be on call – ask to be as close to their place of work as possible.'

John Henry Court, a block of self-contained, purpose-built accommodation on the PEH campus, is always full, Deputy Brouard said, and always has a waiting list for tenants.

Deputy Roffey said that he accepted that some staff would be happy to live on site but HSC staff had indicated that they were in a minority.
