Harbour Carnival set to splashdown Friday

THE Harbour Carnival is set to return this Friday, despite a 60% increase in the running costs of the event.

The annual family fundraiser is organised by the Guernsey Round Table – and there is still time to get involved.

An event spokeswoman said it was grateful for the support of the volunteers and sponsors, who help make the event happen.

‘The Round Table team are extremely grateful to their main sponsors Walkers Global and Fairfield Wealth, as well as all of the companies who have entered the duck race as they have made it possible for this huge free community event to take place,’ she said.

‘However, with general event running costs sitting at an increase of around 60% in 2022, and without a headline sponsor for the past couple of years, the organisers are welcoming any offers of further support from companies or generous individuals who wish to sponsor the fireworks display or the ever-popular ladies’ dinghy race. There is no minimum sponsorship amount.

'There are also still opportunities to join in with races as a team, from buying a big duck to enter the duck race, to team events.’

The 2020 Harbour Carnival was cancelled due to Covid and the 2021 event was postponed to September. The spokeswoman said the event was building on where it left off last September, with more time to plan and to deliver an event that was better than ever.

Aside from the events and races, there will be live music and entertainment throughout.

As a fundraising event, each year the Round Table team chooses one or two beneficiaries to receive funds raised after costs.

In the past, beneficiaries have included Guernsey Mind, Mug and St John Ambulance.

This year the beneficiaries are the Styx Community Centre, as part of its new fundraising campaign to remodel the centre, and Guernsey Community Savings, which offers basic banking services to those in the community who are unable to access standard bank services.
