St Saviour’s team wins Floral Guernsey
FLORAL GUERNSEY once again attracted an abundance of green-thumbed entrants for this year’s competition.
All entrants were invited to an awards evening held at Les Cotils last week, where the winners for each category were announced.
The Lady Dorey trophy – which goes to the overall winner of the main competition – was won by St Saviour’s parish, headed by Liz Pirouet-Douglas.
There were 13 other awards up for grabs, as well as judges commendation certificates and the DH and ON Falla trophy, which was open to the douzaines and was won by St Sampson’s.
The Joc Watts trophy was won by Colin Falla for his outstanding contribution to Floral Guernsey.
‘It went very well – about 90 people came from most of the parishes and we were really pleased with the turnout,’ said FG chairman John Woodward.
He said they were down on entries from other years with only three entered into the community competition.
‘It’s been a bit different post-Covid with disruption in the way people interact.
‘There has been some struggle in retaining membership, but there have been some very good entries with lovely features.’
Usually there are around eight entries in the category, which is open to all 10 parishes.
‘After Covid people have re-evaluated how the spend their time.
‘The competition is a commitment, there is quite a lot to do, but it is worth the effort,’ said Mr Woodward.
All winners will now have the opportunity to take part in next year’s Britain in Bloom competition, hosted by the Royal Horticultural Society.
