Race for Life will be local event again

A LOCAL take on the Race for Life will be going ahead again this May, as the island will not be part of the UK set of races.

For a second year, Cancer Research UK will not be hosting the Race for Life fundraiser in the island, so local organisers have stepped up to the challenge.

‘The organisers of the official Race for Life have again decided not to run the race in Guernsey, and after a successful event last year of raising £10,000, we decided to do it again this year,’ said Dani Barnett, who is one of the organisers.

‘We call it a race but it’s a run/walk/jog, that we hold each other high to cross the finish line in the fight against cancer. For ones we’ve lost, ones fighting, survivors, previvors and for our future.’

Islanders were disappointed when Cancer Research said it would not be hosting the popular event last year, so Mrs Barnett teamed up with others to host the event.

She is a BRCA gene carrier, which means she has a higher risk of contracting breast cancer, and has been affected personally by cancer, losing family members and friends to the disease.

‘Receiving test results telling you that you have cancer, or you have the genetic mutation, which gives you an extremely high risk of cancer is not something I’d wish upon anyone. I dream of a world free from cancer, so every donation counts,’ she said.

The national charity cited low numbers in recent years and complications due to Covid as the reason it dropped Guernsey from its list.

Last year, local organisers created an event at the KGV, with more than 360 runners taking part, raising £10,000.

Two routes of different lengths were planned to make it as accessible as possible, and these will remain the same this year.

A 3km route is accessible to wheelchairs and buggies, and there is also the staple 5km route.

The local event, sponsored by Bright Electrical, will take place on Sunday 14 May at the KGV at 10.30am.

The event is open to everyone, including dogs, but participants are asked to arrive at 9.30am to register and take part in the warm-up activities hosted by Barre Fusion.

Runners are encouraged to dress up in pink and support the cause.
