CCTV needed in pubs, agrees manager of one Town bar

INSTALLING CCTV in pubs and clubs as part of a continuing police crackdown on sexual offences and violence against women has been welcomed by some establishments.

Home Affairs has raised the idea following talks with campaigners and charities.

It said that it wanted to ensure that everything possible is being done to ensure all premises are doing their part to help protect people, and to deter potential offenders.

‘Proportionate requirements’ for CCTV was one idea discussed.

Six licensed premises in St Peter Port spoken to by the Guernsey Press said that they already had cameras installed.

Golden Lion manager Ryan Taylor said he thought most of Town venues would support any moves to bring in more.

‘You need it, you only have to look at what happens,’ he said.

‘You need CCTV in every pub.’

He said that the police had used CCTV from outside the pub in past prosecutions.

A member of staff at the Albion House confirmed the pub had a number of cameras installed.

‘We have three cameras that cover all the bars and exits,’ they said.

‘We have never had to use it, as we are quite fortunate as we have a friendly atmosphere here.’

It is hoped that the move by Home Affairs, alongside the opening of a sexual assault referral centre, would improve the prospects for prosecutions.

The centre will aim to improve health and criminal justice outcomes for the victims of sexual assault.

No date has yet been given for the opening of the centre, although Home Affairs confirmed that a suitable location has now been identified and a manager appointed.

President Deputy Rob Prow said that details of this appointment were still being finalised.

‘The person filling the role will bring experience and enthusiasm to the project, and will be able to create new momentum to drive its establishment forwards. However there is still a significant amount of work to be done before the centre can open.’
