‘We are excited about opening our doors to the public again this year for visits and events,’ said Helen Glencross, head of heritage services.

‘It will be good to hear the gun again, and it will be fired on day one by our new castle keeper Stuart Falla.’

It is not just Castle Cornet that reopens today as all the Guernsey Museums seasonal sites open their doors to the public.

This means Castle Cornet, the German Naval Signals Museum, and Fort Grey will open daily until the end of October, with a full calendar of events including the popular KPMG Castle Nights, Fete d’Etai and Pirates at the Fort.

While the sites were closed over the winter, staff have taken the opportunity to undertake essential maintenance work.

At Castle Cornet, Gunners Tower has been repointed, continuing the ongoing programme of conservation. Staff have also been working hard at the German Naval Signals HQ tidying the site.

Yesterday they gathered at Castle Cornet for a training day.

‘It’s a chance for everyone to get together and meet new staff, be updated on new work practices, and generally get excited about opening the doors to the public,’ said Mrs Glencross.

Access to the castle is across the castle bridge, which is in need of repair and is being constantly monitored due to safety concerns.

Mrs Glencross said that staff and management had learned to live with the bridge as there had been restrictions on it for some time.

‘We are mindful that it needs attention, but it will not hinder plans for the season.’

Castle Cornet is now open seven days a week 10am to 5pm from today until 29 October. Admission is £11 for adults, free for children under seven and £3 for older Children & Students. Entry for Discovery Pass holders and their children is free.
