Circus says 'show must go on' as it hunts for a venue

A WATERLOGGED showground has caused problems for the touring Gandeys Circus. But it is still intending that the show will go on – somewhere.

Due to recent heavy rainfall, the usual island site for Gandeys Circus off Victoria Avenue has been flooded and there are concerns it may not dry out in time for crews and equipment to arrive on Tuesday.

A representative from Gandeys was in the island yesterday looking at the site, and a number of alternatives, to see how they can ensure that the circus will be coming to town next week.

‘Gandeys Circus has been a regular visitor to Guernsey for many years,’ said tour director Binky Beaumont.

In recent years it has been based on farmland off Victoria Avenue, opposite the Track.

Mr Beaumont was in the island yesterday to assess the site for himself after he was alerted to a potential problem.

‘Due to recent rainfall there is plenty of waterlogging.

‘I received a call from farmer Robin Jamouneau on Wednesday evening with worries over how wet the site was and I caught the next flight on Thursday.

‘There is now a possibility that we may have to move locations.’

Mr Beaumont said he visited between 35 and 40 different possible sites, starting at 5am yesterday, to find a suitable back-up location for the show tent, which measures 60sq. m.

He looked at sites including public parks, school fields and community green spaces.

Another member of the circus crew is now heading to the island to take a further look at the chosen site and other possibles as the sun comes out and dries the St Sampson’s site and other prospects over the weekend.

The circus is currently touring and is performing in Manchester until tomorrow.

More than 50 crew members and 200 tonnes of equipment in 12 articulated lorries are due to be travelling to Guernsey on the ferry from Portsmouth on Tuesday.

What the circus calls its ‘Glitterati’ show, of fashionable people, showbusiness and glamour runs, is due to run locally from Thursday to the following Tuesday.

‘This is a decision we have not taken lightly, but we have had great support, especially the teams from the States, St Peter Port and St Sampson’s constables, and staff from Beau Sejour in helping us in a difficult time,’ said Mr Beaumont.

‘We look forward to bringing the show to you and raising money for Guernsey’s hospice.’

A final decision on venue and details of the show is expected to be announced on Monday.
