Policy & Resources’ new savings sub-committee will launch a survey on Monday inviting every islander to submit up to three suggestions to help reduce States’ spending by up to £16m. a year within five years.

The survey, which is to run for three weeks, will ask for each suggestion for savings to be explained in up to 500 words.

In February the States rejected numerous tax-raising plans to deal with a funding gap projected to be £100m. a year by 2040.

The sub-committee’s chairman, David Mahoney (pictured), said it was now the public’s chance to help meet the challenge.

‘Opening this up to the tens of thousands of adults in Guernsey, I expect we’ll get some ideas we haven’t thought of, so hopefully there will be new ideas, and I’m sure plenty of old ideas as well,’ said Deputy Mahoney.

‘This is a chance for people to say what they feel.

‘We might find there are new opportunities for old ideas. People may say they understand the financial position the States is in and that some old ideas need to come back onto the table.’
