Call for support
ORGANISERS are appealing to the great Guernsey public to close the Island Games in style today by turning out in large numbers for ‘Fantastic Friday’.
Games director Julia Bowditch last night thanked the thousands of volunteers and spectators who have helped make Guernsey 2023 so memorable and urged the island to get behind today’s finale.
‘Thank you, Guernsey, for helping us deliver the best Games possible,’ she said.
‘We’ve already seen five days of incredible sporting action and Fantastic Friday has the week’s most exciting line-up of events.
‘What seems almost the whole island turning out to offer such great support at so many venues is a big part of what has made these Games so special for the athletes competing.
‘Now we want to go out on a high, so we’re encouraging spectators to come out and cheer on the competitors. Our Fantastic Friday is the big one.’
The Town seafront will be at the centre of today’s events, hosting half marathons from 9am, cycling road criteriums at midday and team triathlon from 4pm.
‘We are really excited about bringing those three events to Town and maybe in some case bringing sport to people who haven’t had much of a chance to see the Games so far.
‘That might include me – because athletics is the only sport I have actually managed to watch.’
There are also football finals at Footes Lane and the Corbet Field, athletics relays at Footes Lane, and finals around
