Bailiwick Retail director Scott Cockburn described being alerted by an alarm, which prompted him to look at live CCTV footage on his phone. That showed the broken window.

‘I used the playback function and was able to see how the damage had been caused, so I called 999,’ he said.

Guernsey Police confirmed they attended the scene and subsequently arrested a man in the vicinity on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage.

‘It’s a very unpleasant thing to have happened, but fortunately it’s not a very frequent occurrence,’ Mr Cockburn said.

He said this was the first such incident he was aware of in any of the three stores owned by the company – the others being the Contree Mansell Stores and Island Stores in the Lower Pollet – in the five years he had been director.

Despite the damage, staff were able to open on Saturday morning at the usual time of 7am after Mr Cockburn had spent the night dealing with the situation.

‘I got a taxi down there and was dealing with the police for a while, and then spent three hours cleaning up bits of glass,’ he said.

‘Then I was cutting and boarding for a while longer but when we opened we had to get an extra staff member in to spend another couple of hours cleaning – smashed glass gets everywhere, so we had to be very thorough.’

The missing window was still boarded yesterday.

The arrested suspect appeared in court yesterday, where he entered no plea and the case was adjourned.
