Stopping damp is main goal at Castel
DAMP is the focus of work being undertaken at Castel Primary School this year, which Mr Willcocks said had not seen any major work for some time.
The stonework on the outer west wall of the school is being repointed, while the interior walls of one classroom have been stripped back to the granite for damp-proofing to be installed.
Problems of this nature in a 120-year-old building were, perhaps, no surprise.
This was the first phase of a project that will be spread over several years with the classroom due to be renovated next year already identified. ‘Four classrooms are to be refurbished internally. It’s all about damp remedial work,’ said Mr Willcocks.
As well as the layer of damp-proof material, the uPVC windows are all being replaced with aluminium frames.
Such is the amount of work involved that the classroom will not be ready when youngsters go back to school at the start of September, and for the first few weeks of term they will be taught in one of the huts outside.
There was a big change at the school’s entrance, too, with the head teacher being moved out of their office next to the door and swapped over with the admin/receptionist’s former accommodation further along the corridor.
A window hatch has been created in the wall by the main door and this will enable the receptionist to see visitors as they walk in.
JW Rihoy and Sons is
the main contractor for the project.
