The roof has experienced numerous structural failures in high winds and work is required to rectify problems with cladding.

In the past couple of years, small-scale scaffold structures have been erected in various areas to allow access to the roof for ongoing monitoring and repairs.

Scaffolding was erected along the airside section of the terminal in April and contractors have nearly completed the upper sections on the east and west elevations. Their attention will now turn to the south-facing entrance side.

The structure will extend across the roadway adjacent to the terminal for the scaffolding to be sufficiently braced to allow access to the upper part of the roof canopy at the front of the building.

The remainder of the roof will be enclosed for a full survey and airport officials do not expect the scaffolding to come down before summer 2025.

‘The scaffolding will allow for further ongoing maintenance while a detailed inspection of the roof’s condition is undertaken,’ said Guernsey Ports project manager Joe Armstrong.

‘This will establish what options we have to safeguard and extend the life of the cladding system.

‘How long it remains in place depends to some extent on the outcome of the inspection and the time required to undertake any repairs.

‘However, we anticipate a minimum of a year.

‘Although the scaffolding will be very visible during this time it will not interfere in any way with the normal day to day operations.’
