La Grande Rue is shut while Geomarine installs new water services and replaces old meters.
Clothes shop Ogiers is close to the diversions and said that the road closure has had an effect on the number of customers it was seeing.
‘It is affecting us so far, but it has only been two days,’ said Dee Pithers from Ogiers.
‘The first hour and a half has been very quiet this morning, it could be because it has been quite drizzly, but also the road closure signs at Les Merrienes does not say there is access to shops up here. Usually in August we get a lot of visitors coming after seeing us from their way into town from the airport, but they are missing us because there is nothing coming this way.’
Multiple bus routes – the 81, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, and N3 – have been affected by the road closure, which is between the Grande Rue car park and School Lane.
Becky Rowe said that her jewellery shop has been affected by the closure, and that people in St Martin’s were fed up with the road closures.
‘There is not just this road that is closed, there are multiple roadworks around here at the minute and I think people are fed up with the amount in the area,’ she said.
‘It’s been obvious there are less people around.’
Valpy’s director Lisa Gidney said that despite a loss in passing trade, the shop has still been busy.
‘We’ve been lucky that we have still been busy,’ she said.
‘There has been a loss of passing trade, but people have been still coming and have phoned up to ask for the best way to get to us.’
At Adventure Cycles, co-owner Sam Rouxel said the work needed to be done.
‘The workshop is still busy, but passing trade is down,’ he said.
‘It’s one of those things, you’ve just got to grin and bear it and carry on.’
Traffic is being diverted along Fort Road, down Colborne Road, up Ruette Bray onto Le Friteaux to Les Merrienes and vice versa. Les Camps du Moulin, Ruette Rabey and Ville Amphrey are also one way during the closure of the Grandes Rue.
The work had been expected to take two weeks, but Geomarine has now updated its completion date to this Friday.
