The show was officially opened yesterday at 1pm by racing driver Andy Priaulx MBE, but before the public were allowed in to St Martin’s Community Centre to see the entries, judges had the hard task of choosing first, second and third from each class.

Graham Dorey and Stuart Smale were judging some of the vegetable classes and said that the quality of entries this year was high.

‘It has been very good this year,’ said Mr Smale.

‘We are looking for uniformity, any damage from slugs or anything, and that they are consistent in quality.’

They also said that entries this year seem to be up on previous years.

‘The numbers in the classes are very good and the quality of the entries too is high,’ said Mr Dorey.

‘It’s been a tough task to pick the winners this year.’

As well as vegetables there are classes for floral displays and model miniature gardens.

‘It has been excellent this year,’ said Mary Kirkpatrick, who was judging the floral displays with Jenny Dorey.

‘It’s very well supported and the standard is very high.'

As well as the categories for home-grown vegetables and flowers, there was categories for baked goods and a notable winner.

‘The men’s category has been won by the Lt-Governor for his entry of a banana cake,’ said South Show Society president Mike Weysom. He beat 19 other entries to win.

Mr Weysom said that he had been surprised at how good the quality of this year's entries had been.

‘It has been a hard year for growing with the weather,’ he said.

‘But despite that there has been some top class produce.’

He said to help make the set up easier the society had bought new tables due to a lack of volunteers.

‘We still need helpers,’ he said.

The show continues today, with a dog show taking place in conjunction with the GSPCA.

Registration for the dog show opens at noon, with the show taking place at 2pm. All proceeds go to the GSPCA.
