Blue plaque unveiled to Le Platon founder
THE founder of Le Platon Residential Care Home has been commemorated with Guernsey’s 15th blue plaque.
Edith Renouf founded the home in 1914 – making it Guernsey’s oldest care home.
‘I think she had this real desire to help people,’ said Helen Glencross, head of heritage services at Guernsey Museum.
Miss Renouf spoke seven languages and trained in medicine, but never became a practising doctor.
She originally opened Le Platon when it was known as St Petronilla’s Home, with three residents.
Today Le Platon has 50 residents living at Clifton in St Peter Port.
In 1952 King George VI conferred an MBE on Miss Renouf four years before she died at age 92 in 1956.
‘She’s such a worthy recipient, she did such amazing work, and you can see the product of her work here today which is still going on,’ said Mrs Glencross.
Throughout the years Le Platon has tried to change with the needs and requirements of Guernsey.
‘I think it’s the most modern, up-to-date facility in Guernsey,’ said one of the directors of Le Platon, and local GP, Dr Robert Hanna.
‘Edith Renouf is a Guernsey woman who has been recognised for her contributions to the island.
‘I hope someone will be inspired by Edith’s life and know that this has actually happened here in Guernsey,' he said.
