Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden glasshouse damaged by storm
Shattered glass was left all over the floor at the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden in Saumarez Park after Storm Darragh hit.
Part of the wooden window panes in the glasshouse was ripped up, causing the glass to fall through.
As a volunteer organisation, the team said yesterday that they were unsure how or when they would be able to afford repairs.
‘We already had someone booked in for January for maintenance on the glass and woodwork,’ said volunteer Jill Tetlaw.
‘We were using our finances and donations from our events to raise money and finish the gatehouse. We’re just about finished on that and then this happens.
‘We’re all volunteers, even the head gardener, so this is very disheartening and will likely cost a lot to repair it.
‘This is now a no-go area because if we have any more high winds we’re afraid that the rest will lift.’
The original plan was to do repairs and maintenance to the glasshouse in three stages, but the storm damage will now be needed to be repaired first.
The States owns the building and it is managed by the States Property Unit.
Staff were called to investigate and secure the broken roof preventing further damage.
The glasshouse has traditional scalloped glass panes.
Items usually kept in that part of the glasshouse have been moved.
The Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden at Saumarez Park has become a social centre for people seeking opportunities to work in a garden but without the responsibility of ownership.
The renovation of the gatehouse is near completion and will become a horticultural education and learning centre.
Anyone who wishes to donate money in aid of the repairs can do so here, can email infovwkg@walledgarden.gg, or call 246960.
