A recent survey identified the building’s balcony required structural repairs, while aspects of it need updates to meet modern health and safety regulations.

The college is working with architectural firm The Drawing Room on the project.

A spokeswoman for the college said as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and preserving its estate, regular planned and preventative maintenance surveys were conducted across all of its buildings.

She added that the work would aim to preserve the pavilion’s historic character and enhance its usability, ensuring it remained a ‘safe and welcoming space’ for future generations.

The pavilion was originally constructed in 1924 on the field off Kings Road as a memorial to Old Elizabethans who died during the First World War.

Over the course of more than a century, it has served as a hub for college and community sport and gatherings, and has also played a role in history.

During the Occupation, the pavilion provided refuge for two British Army officers, both Old Elizabethans, who were on a covert reconnaissance mission.
