Sarah Van Zutphen, 18, will be starting a four-year course in media and communications from September and is excited to experience life at an internationally-based university in Canada.

‘It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Only one person gets to go, and so I thought that I would give it a try,’ she said.

‘Canada’s huge and living in Guernsey where it’s so small, you want to get out of here early and see a bit more.

‘The thought of going is quite nerve-wracking but I think it will be an interesting experience and something that will set me up for later in life, especially for studying.’

Each year Brock University in Ontario awards a full academic scholarship to a student in recognition of Guernsey-born Sir Isaac Brock, who the university was named after, who commanded British and Canadian soldiers in the war in 1812 and became one of Canada’s great military heroes.

After her studies at the university, Sarah hopes to go onto a career in journalism.

‘I’d really like to do something with broadcasting or other journalism,’ she said.

‘I think that it will be very different.

‘I haven’t been to Canada before, but the difference between British and Canadian culture will be interesting, and to see what it’s like in an internationally-based university.’

Sarah is currently studying the IB diploma at the Sixth Form Centre.

‘The IB diploma lends itself to an international mindset and being open to new cultures, and Brock is a very international university with students from all over the world, and there are some great opportunities in such a big city,’ said principal Kieran James.

‘When Sarah gets there, there will be a former student in each year of the university, and we’re really delighted to have her there too.’
