It gained 887 signatures, 600 of which were online.
‘For what was created on an impulse, I’m amazed at how many people have signed it,’ said petition creator Jane Dilcock.
‘The St Martin’s branch is already so much closer to Town, and neither are easy for people who have mobility issues.’
The Bridge branch is due to shut for good this September, with the bank arguing that fewer people were using banks, when they had the option of online and mobile banking.
Fran Torode supported the petition and placed physical copies in nearby areas.
‘The unfortunate part about the petition was that some people felt they couldn’t sign because they don’t bank with HSBC.
‘The St Martin’s branch isn’t as easy to park as here and the Town branch isn’t accessible.
‘Some people have already changed banks due to other bank closures on the Bridge, so HSBC will be losing customers.’
Mrs Dilcock booked an appointment at the bank to hand in the petition.
She received a copy of the letter and email addresses for people to contact.
‘I think this was a partial success, to say the petition was a gut feeling,’ she said.
‘I’ll definitely be contacting them, plus it helps to keep the Bridge alive.’
The branch is being kept open for now while the St Martin’s branch at Manor Stores is being refurbished. That site is set to reopen in early August and the Bridge branch will close on Wednesday 24 September.
