Guernsey Water asking islanders to cut their water use voluntarily

Guernsey’s water reserves are coming under increased pressure, with local water storage dropping by 33m. litres in just a week.

More hot weather is predicted, with temperatures up to 24C expected at the weekend.

It follows temperatures hitting 30C at the end of June.

It was not only the hottest day of the year so far, but also saw the highest water usage of the year so far at 15.4m. litres.

That is about 234 litres per person that day.

‘We’ve barely even started the traditional summer months and this sort of usage, coupled with hardly any rainfall, means our storage levels are under pressure,’ a Guernsey Water spokesman said.

‘Most of the year’s rain fell in January, when we were at 100% storage, so couldn’t capture any more. Last week we collected 58m. litres [and] we used 91m. litres. That’s a shortfall of 33m. litres.’

He said it was concerning that that the island’s dry spell had lasted since February.

‘Right now we’re around 200m. litres off where we normally are – that’s half a month’s worth of use,’ he said.

‘All we are asking for at this stage is voluntary cuts to your water use.’

‘These are tiny tweaks, but when thousands of people do them, they work,’ he said.

‘Together we’re going to cut that weekly deficit and protect our supplies.’

The appeal comes as the UK’s first hosepipe ban of 2025 was declared in Yorkshire, and the UK prepares for temperatures of 33C, as the third heatwave of the year arrives.
