Brett Bewey ran 72.7 miles in exactly 24 hours in the blistering heat to raise money for Man Club.
‘It’s been amazing, just the number of people who have come down through the night, everyone’s been here since about 8am, and other than one hour I don’t think we’ve not had people down here,’ he said.
‘The hardest part was about four hours in, I know it’s early but I just didn’t think I could do it, I didn’t speak for a couple of hours.’
He said that he had been a little nervous when he saw the weather forecast, but knew that he would never be too far from the aid station.
St Jacques Vikings had an event at Footes Lane on Saturday night, the music and rugby antics spurred on Mr Bewey.
Originally, the challenge was meant to be taken on by more people. There was a 24-hour and a 12-hour version planned, but limited numbers meant the event did not go ahead as expected.
‘I’d already started raising money for Man Club and I’d been in contact with them over email, the donations were already rolling so I thought I had to do it,’ said Mr Bewey.
It is expected that he has raised £2,000.
‘We run groups encouraging men to talk and providing a time and place for them to do that,’ said Paul Armstrong of Man Club.
‘This money will mean we can run a group at a venue for a year.
‘We’re not an expensive club to run but donations and activities like this make a huge difference for us.’
