Lions Club president John McLoughlin has been looking forward to greeting the donkeys, which arrived on the ferry on Thursday.

‘It’s been going for 54 years and has always been a community event,’ he said.

‘Every year the community support us very well.’

This year 12 donkeys from UK group Dashing Donkeys have come over the channel to take part. Alongside donkey racing the event will host a licensed bar, food village, general stalls, charity stalls, bouncy castle, tombola and a performance from Rebellion All-Stars.

‘We’ll have a beer tent including cans and soft drinks, Jamaican food, burgers, hot dogs, Thai, all in the catering village,’ added Lions Club membership and youth chairman Paul Allaway.

‘About 3,000 to 4,000 people come down throughout the day, people go away happy. Previously the derby raised about £8,000 but it varies depending on weather and crowds.’

Jockeys aged between 10 and 16 with riding experience have volunteered to help with riding the donkeys in the races.

All funds raised go to the Lions Club so the charity can continue helping the community.

‘The more the merrier, the more we raise the more we can do around the community, helping people,’ said Mr McLoughlin.

The event takes place today at Sausmarez Park from 11.45am and runs until around 6pm.

Parking is £5 and entry is free.

Bus services 41, 42, and P2 operate close to the park.
