The work is part of Environment & Infrastructure’s coastal maintenance programme and includes work on the sea wall by La Lague slipway and the inner and outer piers.
‘We are repairing the pier as the end is near collapse, so we’re doing this now before anything happens,’ said Stoneworks’ William Konken.
‘We have taken down all of the stone and are rebuilding it back with more granite and concrete.’
The stonemasons are working on both La Lague sea wall and the pier, switching between the two depending on the height of the tide.
‘It’s definitely more pressure working against the tide. We can only work on the pier for about three hours before we have to stop for the tide to come back in,’ said Mr Konken.
‘We have to stop an hour before it reaches the pier so the quick-set concrete has time to set.’
He added that an added difficulty was that the evenings were getting darker earlier – sunset tonight is just after 7pm.
Five parking spaces near to the kiosk have been suspended for the duration of the works, with the two parallel spaces directly behind the kiosk also suspended.
Six parking spaces have been suspended on the main road while the wall is repaired.
The work on the piers is due to be completed over the next couple of weeks. The repointing work will run until early next year.
