Painted by local artists Tiffany Anna and Woodie, the vibrant artwork, which at approximately 36 feet wide and 20 feet high will probably be the largest mural on the island, will greet visitors and locals alike as they enter the building.
The painting will feature symbols of Guernsey, including a puffin, the Guernsey lily and local seaweed.
‘We wanted to create something that immediately makes people feel the magic of Guernsey the moment they arrive,’ said Tiffany Anna.
‘The puffin, lily and seaweed are symbols of the island’s beauty and heritage, and we hope this mural brings a smile to everyone who passes by.’
Anyone using the airport will be able to see the mural come to life over the coming weeks as over 40 litres of colourful paint are applied to what is currently a flat white wall.
‘It’s the largest thing I’ve ever painted,’ said Tiffany.
‘The largest thing before this was the mural at Richmond kiosk, although being jellyfish that was more abstract, while this is more structured.’
However, Woodie has worked on other large murals, including one at Channel Welders.
‘But never anything as high as this,’ he said.
‘I’m not actually that good with heights and Tiff will be doing most of the high work which she’s actually looking forward to.’
Tiffany wanted to thank everyone who had made the project possible.
‘That’s Butterfield, who sponsored the painting, David Buddery and Guernsey Ports for all their assistance, B&Q for their donation of paints, Alex Ford at 4hire for generously providing equipment, and the team at Impact Scaffolding for their help with the scaffold tower setup,’ she said.
Despite working indoors, the duo have found themselves having to battle the weather.
‘It was lovely when we started,’ said Tiff.
‘But we are working right next to the automatic doors and the wind comes whistling through any time anyone comes in. Not ideal when you are painting and trying to keep a steady hand.’
Richard Saunders, managing director of Butterfield in the Channel Islands, said they were proud to be involved.
No tight deadline had been put on the completion of the works, as the couple are fitting it around their full-time jobs, Tiff’s other artwork and Woodie’s work as a tattoo and street artist.
‘We hope it will be finished in a couple of weeks,’ said Tiffany. ‘We will be up on Sundays and most evenings during the week to get it done.’
The artists started last week but it’s only now that the images are taking shape as blocks of colour are added.
‘People coming in so far have been really supportive and really fascinated by what we are doing,’ she said.
‘Like us, they can’t wait to see it finished.’
