The prizegiving event at Brighton’s Grand Hotel on Friday attracted hopeful horticulturalists from across Britain.
The team from St Saviour’s was representing Guernsey for the second time, having won a gold in 2023.
‘We won the Guernsey event again in 2024 and that gave us the chance to represent Guernsey in the national competition this year,’ explained Liz Pirouet-Douglas, who was one of six representatives from the parish at the event.
‘We are absolutely thrilled to have got a gold, a lot of hours have gone into it. It is a real honour to represent Guernsey on the national stage.’
The parish was one of the four national finalists in the village and large village category, being assessed on floral, environmental and community aspects.
The category was won by Filby in Norfolk, while Southport was named the overall winners, as well as winning the coastal category.
Mrs Pirouet-Douglas estimated 2,000 hours of hard work had gone into the parish’s entry.
‘A huge thank you to everyone who helped,’ she said. ‘The newspaper isn’t big enough to thank everyone who contributed.’
Alderney won this year’s local event and the right to represent Guernsey in 2026, but Mrs Pirouet-Douglas said St Saviour’s was determined to be back in 2027.
‘We have some big things planned for next year, we are looking to create a new area at the community centre, with new trees and a secret path,’ she said.
‘We are also going to be exploring collecting and using seaweed as a fertiliser. We are hoping some vraic will improve our soil, which can be quite poor.’
