With Christmas party season now upon us, the campaign reminds islanders of the serious consequences of driving over the legal alcohol limit. From fines and legal repercussions to the risk of causing harm the impacts of drink driving can be life-changing. This year to date there have been 78 drink-driving convictions in the courts, only two less than there were throughout the whole of 2024.

‘This is a message that everyone should be thinking about at all times of the year. We want people to enjoy themselves, but at Christmas, the temptation to drink and drive can be much greater. The consequences of being caught can be devastating – from causing an accident, facing a heavy fine, to damaging family relationships and even risking imprisonment,’ said Andrea Nightingale, substance use lead at the Health Improvement Commission.

‘Please plan your nights out in advance. If you think you might be tempted to drive home, don’t drive to the venue in the first place. Remember BLT – bus, lift, taxi. Make a safe choice before the night begins.’

Stagecoach and Lambourne Taxis are showing their commitment to safer roads by featuring the campaign message on the backs of their buses and taxis. The charity Smile for Georgie is also supporting the campaign.

‘We are pleased to support this important campaign and help raise awareness of the dangers associated with drink driving. If our involvement encourages even one person to make a safer choice, then it will have been worthwhile,’ said Jenny Le Prevost, Smile for Georgie co-founder and trustee.
