Alderney swimming pool has moved no further forward

Efforts to find a contractor to progress the drawn-out swimming pool project in Alderney have so far been unsuccessful, the island’s General Services Committee said in its annual report.

On other issues, the committee said it was waiting for recommendations from a review of the island’s waste management and looking at how best to spend £1.1m. remaining from the island’s road resurfacing programme over the next four years

Work to build the pool at St Anne’s School started in 2014 but ran out of funds three years later after problems with foundations, leadership and finances.

More than £250,000 had been raised by the public and matched by the States at the time.

‘Despite a lease being prepared for the Alderney Community Sports Centre Trust to take on responsibility for the swimming pool, it was not signed,’ said the committee.

‘A tender process for a review to understand the risks and cost required for the States to finish the building has so far been unsuccessful but is required before the States can decide to consider committing more funds to this project.’

The committee was still looking for a building surveyor to determine the extent of the work needed and the likely funding required, it said.

It said it was also looking at providing JetA1 fuel at the airport to help with payloads, mainly for Southampton flights.

‘This requires approval of a proof of concept and then tendering for a one-year trial.

‘Should this be successful, consideration may be given the additional provision of AvGas.’
