Who left the lights on? School can finally switch off

The external lights at Les Varendes High School are now able to be turned off when not needed, as the school upgrades its electrical building management system.

For more than a year the car park lights have remained on all day and all night due to the fact that with the original building management system, each zone could not be controlled individually. So if there was electrical activity in one zone, all would be powered.

That is until now. An upgrade at the school is under way which will see each zone controlled individually.

The lights section of the upgrade was completed this week, meaning that they are now part of the new building management system.

The lights will now only come on in the day once it gets dark enough and will shut off late evening once activity at the site has concluded.

‘The external lighting at Les Varendes High School was controlled by the site’s original building management system, which is now at end of life,’ said Justin Diamond, head of operations at the States Property Unit.

These low-level, low-energy LED lights are in place primarily for safety and security around the school perimeter.

But under the electrical system it was not possible to independently control this individual lighting zone.

‘A significant upgrade to the building management system is under way across the campus. Once complete, the new system will allow far greater flexibility, enabling more precise time-based control of both internal and external lighting, while continuing to meet safety and security requirements.

‘The works are progressing well, and the lighting element of the upgrade is almost complete.

'As this is a major system upgrade, the work has been carefully scheduled to avoid disruption to the school.’
