The Donkey Fought Back was written after Mr Ogier came into contact with Chris Murray, one of the campaigners against the goods and services tax.
When Mr Murray found out that Mr Ogier wrote his own songs, he suggested that he come up with a protest song for the campaign.
‘I said “I’ll have a go”,’ said Mr Ogier.
‘I’ve actually done one protest song before. I only wrote it for myself. It was when the “Enough is Enough” Guernsey campaign was going on.’
Mr Murray liked that one, so Mr Ogier sat down and wrote one for the GST protest.
He said the beat was inspired by Russian Cossack dancing tunes as well as sea shanties, ‘because when they all sing together it sounds like a crowd, and the chant could be used if they wanted to’.
He used music software programs Band In A Box and Garage Band to record the tune, augmenting it with AI in some sections.
‘I use it to pinch voices you can’t do yourself, like for the chanting,’ he said.
Mr Ogier has been writing songs for years, after playing in bands locally since he was 15.
He moved away from the island for several years, but returned in 2011 when his mother became ill and he spent time performing with a band called Country Steel.
These days he restricts his performances to solo gigs in residential homes and to recording songs which he shares on YouTube.
