Due to the specialist nature of the school and the complex needs of its pupils, Le Rondin does not operate a daily breakfast club and had not previously been able to provide milk during the school day.
Under the arrangement, part of the States’ Milk for Schools programme, Le Rondin children have been enjoying a daily glass of milk since the beginning of this term.
‘Because of the complexities of many of our pupils, good nutrition is incredibly important,' said deputy head teacher Christine DeKock.
'Since the start of this term, pupils have been enjoying a daily glass of milk, and it has been so rewarding to see the smiles on their faces when milk time comes around.'
Milk for Schools is a community health programme that is providing a daily serving of fresh Guernsey milk to children in primary schools’ breakfast clubs, pre-schools, and day nurseries.
The scheme, supported by the Education Committee and the island’s clinical lead dietician, aims to ensure that every child can receive a nutritious start to their day.
The NHS says that one serving of milk per day helps to contribute to a child’s daily protein requirements, fuelling growth and energy to help them concentrate, learn, and perform at their best.
Guernsey Dairy is looking for more sponsors so the initiative can be extended to include more primary schools and early years settings.
‘Our intention is to establish Milk for Schools across all primary schools and early years settings to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a nutritious start to their day – however, this is going to take time and needs the support of the local community to achieve its core objectives,’ said Andrew Tabel, operations director at Guernsey Dairy.
Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring a primary school breakfast club or early years setting should email milkforschools@guernseydairy.com.
