Ryan Abbot, of Le Douit Lane, Vale, admitted driving at a speed dangerous to the public.

The court was told how it had been raining intermittently and a strong wind combined with a high tide had resulted in debris being thrown over the sea wall.

A police officer was was situated at Route de la Rocque Poisson, St Peter’s, at 11.10pm when he heard the defendant’s black VW Golf approaching from the south.

He estimated its speed to be about 55mph and when the vehicle jerked on an S bend he decided to follow it.

The VW was still accelerating and the officer used a pro-laser device to record its speed of 77mph. The officer thought he might not be able to keep up with the vehicle due to the conditions so he deployed his blue lights and used his radio to see if there were colleagues further up the road who could help.

He spoke to the driver when the car stopped at a car park at L’Eree. He had two passengers in the vehicle.

Defending, Advocate Sarah Morgan said her client accepted he had been really stupid on the night. He had no experience of driving at that sort of speed which was inappropriate on Guernsey roads anyway.

Judge Gary Perry said he had read the three character references that had been submitted on the defendant’s behalf and noted that he had no previous convictions.

Young people made mistakes but this was a big one, he said, and it had been a 'totally ridiculous speed' for the roads of the island.
