States agree £24m. funding to progress Alderney runway work

Deputies have given the Policy & Resources Committee the go-ahead to approve spending of up to £24m. over the next couple of years to complete the rehabilitation of the runway at Alderney airport.

Deputy Yvonne Burford said that approval of the work was needed now to allow it to take place in time for the 2027 summer season.

In a short debate yesterday the senior committee was given approval to start the procurement process, having delegated authority to spend up to £24m., which was the original sum for the project.

It will now work with the Alderney States and the States Trading Supervisory Board before reporting back to the Guernsey States following the tender process to confirm the final value of the contract.

Opening debate for P&R, member Deputy Yvonne Burford said that approval of the work was needed now to allow it to take place in time for the 2027 summer season. Any delay could push the work back by a year.

She assured members that P&R and the STSB ‘are going to be all over this project like a rash’ to ensure that spending was kept under control.

‘£24m. is a maximum, not a target,’ she said.

This was based on a ‘do minimum’ option to deliver a functional and compliant runway, she said.

The vote was approved by 32 votes to three, with Deputies Simon Vermeulen, Liam McKenna and Neil Inder voting against.
