The firm was set up by Geoff Van Katwyk and he built the business from scratch with the help of a small dedicated team, some of whom remain with the business today. Five years ago Mark Edgar joined as Geoff’s business partner and together they have evolved the firm’s systems and processes to streamline operations, including investing in technology and, most importantly, the team of now more than 20 people.

‘Guernsey’s finance industry is critical but without trades and supporting industries, there would not be a finance industry. It needs careful balance, which I believe we are starting to see come together,’ said Mark.

‘It is pleasing to see that the States of Guernsey are altering employment legislation to allow “key workers” to work, and pay taxes. Historically you could argue only “essential workers” could gain a licence. Every person who works in the island is essential somewhere in the chain.’

Experience from more senior members of staff, including Geoff and Mark, is now being passed onto the next generation, with the company taking on apprentices yearly.

‘Training is vital and apprentices are a necessity. As a business in this trade it’s our duty to support those willing to have a career in metalwork, and indeed all other trades, and the College of FE is critical to Guernsey in helping industries with this,’ said Mark.

Guernsey Metals is heavily involved in the fabrication and installation of structural steel as well as work with stainless steel and aluminium. The metalwork business also makes gates, balconies, benches, balustrades and much more.

Recently Guernsey Metals has started laser cleaning to help ensure customers’ metalwork looks its best. Laser cleaning is a non-chemical removal of rust, paint and other coatings without damaging the surface and is much more environmentally friendly.

Guernsey Metals has a fantastic network of suppliers, from materials, haulage and freight to health and safety training, who all help to keep the business running smoothly.

The Confederation of Guernsey Industry (CGi) has championed the island’s grassroots industries — particularly those operating outside the finance sector for 30 years.

The CGi represents a wide range of non-finance businesses, from sole traders to multinational companies, reflecting the diversity and resilience of our broader economy.

Many of these work behind the scenes, making vital contributions that often go unnoticed. This series of articles shines a light on these unsung heroes of the non-finance sector and raises awareness of the important role they play.
