The local charity, which provides palliative care to the Bailiwick community, is inviting individuals and teams of four to put their best foot forward next month and commit to compete in its active fundraising mission.
‘There are so many physical and mental health benefits to walking but with busy lifestyles we often don’t walk enough,’ said Liz Stonebridge, senior fundraiser at Les Bourgs Hospice.
‘This fundraising challenge aims to reinforce the excellent work of the Health Improvement Commission but we also want to do our bit to encourage more active lifestyles to support improved long-term health for our community.
‘We’re proud that our fundraising challenges encourage people to get more active and build sustainable habits to move more, but as we look to the future in our 35th birthday year it is more important than ever that we promote healthier lifestyles for our community.’
From 1 April, it is encouraging individuals to walk 10,000 steps – or a daily mile – for 30 days. Teams of four can work together, convert their steps to mileage, and see where in the world they can collectively reach by the end of the month. Corporate teams are also challenged to go head-to-head for the most steps. Inspiration for walking routes can be found on Visit Guernsey’s website, National Trust of Guernsey’s walking routes and the Ruettes Tranquilles’ online guide or app.
Appleby is supporting the event, ensuring that all of the money raised will go directly towards the hospice, and its palliative care, complex respite care, symptom management, bereavement support and its wellbeing services.
The challenge costs £15 for adults, £10 for over-65s, £5 for U18s, £60 for a team of four to enter. More information about the event, including how to register, can be found at www.lesbourgshospice.org.gg.
